Australia’s ambassador to Israel reprimanded over "wretched decision" to remove Australia’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry is considering further retaliatory measures against Canberra after summoning Australia’s ambassador, Paul Griffiths, for an official reprimand the day after the Australian Government announced it would no longer recognise West Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Griffiths met with Israel’s Foreign Ministry’s political director Aliza Bin-Noun, who told him the move would encourage extremist elements in the West Bank to continue stoking violence, and risked destabilising the region amid heightened tensions with Palestinians as a maritime border deal with Lebanon was close to completion. She also objected that the decision came during Sukkot and Simchat Torah.
The Foreign Ministry described the move as a “wretched decision” and Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who also serves as foreign minister, responded on Twitter with an attack on the Australian Government’s handling of the issue.
Within Australia the move was attacked by Shadow Minister Peter Dutton and the independent member for Wentworth Allegra Spender. The Morrison government's decision to recognise West Jerusalem in 2018 was made just before a Wentworth by-election and Senator Wong has described it as a cynical ploy to win the electorate's significant Jewish minority.
Spender said she was disappointed by the Government's action and was writing to the Foreign Minister to express her deep concerns.
"The federal Government’s decision to withdraw recognition of West Jerusalem was rushed and badly handled – made without proper consultation. Announcing the decision on a Jewish holy day was even worse, as it precluded community organisations from making a public response.
"Every sovereign nation, including Israel, has the right to determine its own capital. Australia should play a constructive role in supporting a two-state solution, and these actions undermine our efforts without any gains."
